Baking with CBD is like a dream come true. Not only do you get to bake delicious treats, but you can also create your delectable edibles that promote calmness and relaxation, among other therapeutic benefits. And bonus, CBD baked goods may take a little longer to feel the effects, but the effects of an edible can last about 2-4 hours longer than some CBD products.
Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, is one of over 100 active compounds found in Cannabis Sativa plants. CBD is a non-intoxicating and non-euphoric compound and will provide some pretty amazing therapeutic benefits- like easing achy muscles, improving sleep cycles, and bringing calming and relaxation to your mind and body- without the high.
Since the Farm Bill of 2018 was signed, CBD products in the United States have become federally legal. CBD products you purchase have to be extracted from the hemp plant and contain less than 0.3% THC. This standard makes it legal to buy and sell CBD products in the USA.
Now we can bake the edibles of our choice and promote calmness as we snack. But before you start, let’s get some basics out of the way, so you get the best results for all your CBD baked goods.
Baking with CBD is possible because it is oil-based.
Hemp-derived CBD oil has high concentrations of CBD and is super popular for being a healthy fat alternative. CBD oil is typically formulated with a carrier oil like hemp seed oil (which is different than hemp-derived CBD oil) or MCT oil (derived from coconuts).
The carrier oil your CBD is formulated with is an essential part of your CBD product. The carrier oil, like hemp-seed oil or MCT oil, is necessary to your CBD product- gummies, oils, or capsules- because it helps increase the bioavailability of the oil. Which is the fancy way of saying the carrier oil determines how much CBD your body absorbs and uses. CBD needs to be in the presence of fat to be effectively absorbed in your body.
CBD flavor is an integral part of any baked good.
CBD oil is excellent, and it’s a remarkable supplement to add to your daily routine, even in the form of edibles. There are so many different flavors of CBD oil on the market today. Flavors of CBD often range from natural to fruity, to minty.
When looking to bake with CBD, make sure you pick a recipe that pairs well with your CBD oil flavor. At Molecular CBD Shop, we currently only offer mint flavor as it has a nice and refreshing taste for the hemp-derived oil and still pairs well in smoothies, coffee, teas, and baked goods!
CBD dosage matters in your baked goods just as much as it does if you were taking it sublingually.
Just like your recipe calls for ingredients and the right amount of it, you want to make sure you add the right amount of CBD to the recipe. Just like adding the right amount of flour is important, so is adding the right amount of CBD. It ensures you get the desired potency of CBD per serving.
To find the amount of CBD oil, you need to add to your recipe, take your desired dosage per edible and multiply it by the number of servings you intend to have.
For example, if you are making chocolate chip cookies and the recipe will make 24 cookies, and you want each cookie to have about 16.67 mg of CBD, you would need a total of 400 mg of CBD.
24 cookies x 16.67 mg CBD = 400 mg of CBD
Once you have the CBD oil amount, remember to subtract that amount from the oil you are baking with so you don’t have too much in your recipe. For this, you would want to deduct one teaspoon of oil for every 3 ml of CBD oil.
Baking with CBD also means you have to watch the temperature.
When baking with CBD is that the boiling point for Cannabinoids is between 320 to 356 degrees Fahrenheit (F). Temperature is crucial to baking with CBD because if you bake at higher temperatures could cause the cannabinoids and terpenes to burn off or evaporate, leaving with CBD baked goods that are not potent or effective.
By baking at within those temperatures, your edibles may take longer to bake, but you are ensuring that you have the most potent form of cannabis possible in your CBD baked goods.
Store your CBD baked goods in a cool, dark spot of the kitchen.
CBD is sensitive to light and heat. It’s why products or descriptions tell you to store your CBD in a cool, dark place. To properly store your CBD baked goods, place them in an airtight container, and put them in a spot in your kitchen that doesn’t get a lot of light and heat.
Now it’s time to try baking with CBD. Here is one of our favorite household cookie recipes. I am all about making my cookie as healthy as can be, while not losing the deliciousness of the sweetness. I substitute my flour and sugars out with coconut; you can use regular if you like.
