3 Amazing CBD-Infused Post-Workout Smoothies for Better Recovery

As an endurance athlete, I have learned and experienced the importance of fueling my body after a workout. I will share my 3 favorite CBD-infused post-workout smoothies with you that are my go-to recipes after an intense run.

But first…

Why Is It So Important to Fuel Your Body Post-Workout?

Anyone who has spent some time reaching new fitness goals knows the impact exercise can have on your body. Of course, we slowly see the outward body changes, but what I am talking about is how your body endures stress after a hard workout.

(Hard meaning you weren't out for a leisurely stroll, but got your heart pumping for over 30 minutes!)

Two significant functions happen in your body in an intense workout. First, your body burns up its glycogen stores for fuel. And second, your body breaks down and damages some of the proteins in your muscles.

So post-workout, your body tries to then build its glycogen stores and repair and regrow muscle proteins.

It is why post-workout recovery is so essential to any workout goals. With the right post-workout fuel, your body may be able to speed up muscle recovery and improve fitness performance. To make this happen, your body needs the proper nutrients after you exercise.

Which brings us to nutrition. The foundation of any healthy lifestyle.

What Are the Right Nutrients for Post-Workout Recovery?

Protein and carbs are the answer! And as you read this, don't think any proteins and carbs will do, but understand it has to be healthy proteins and carbs.

Protein helps repair and build your muscles. Carbs help replenish your glycogen stores. Consuming the right amount of protein and carbs is essential for anyone wanting to have a better recovery post-workout.

A healthy protein and carbohydrate mix will help your body:

  1. Decrease muscle protein breakdown
  2. Increase muscle protein growth
  3. Restore glycogen stores
  4. Enhance recovery

After intense exercise, protein gives your body the amino acids it needs to repair and rebuild the muscles' proteins. And when I say protein, I am not talking about just meat or animal protein powder; I am also talking plant-based protein.

The researchers who study exercise and the body recommend that you consume 0.14-0.23 grams of protein per pound of body weight after you exercise. For a 145-pound female, you will want to have about 21-33 grams of protein like me.

Studies have shown that consuming 20-40 grams of protein maximizes the body's ability to recover after exercise.

Carbs don't always have the best reputation. Still, they are essential to your post-workout recovery and just everyday nutritious living! Consuming carbs after a workout helps your body replenish its glycogen stores. And don't worry, you can get in carbs without eating bad food!

Endurance athletes, especially, need more carbs than those who stick to resistance training or yoga. But whether you are an endurance athlete or a yogi, carbs should still be a part of your post-workout recovery.

Again, by those scientists who study all this, it is recommended that you consume 0.5-0.7 grams of carbs per pound of body weight after you exercise. For a 145-pound female, you will want to have about 73-102 grams of carbohydrates like me.

And guess what, these same studies show that it is essential to consume this protein and carb mix within 30 minutes after you exercise. So do some stretching and then get to fuel your body. And remember to hydrate throughout the day.

Bottom Line: Fuel your body with good proteins and carbs 30 minutes after your intense workout.

You may have noticed my smoothies have 3 extra ingredients that I didn't mention earlier. I call them my secret weapons!

Cinnamon, Turmeric, and CBD Oil.. My secret ingredients to a post-workout smoothie. Learn more at Molecular CBD Shop

My Secret Weapon to My Post-Workout Smoothies

The protein and carb mix we learned about is crucial to fueling your body quickly. But I am a fan of adding extra ingredients to the mix to enhance my post-workout recovery even more! If that is even possible!

My 3 favorite secret ingredients are:

  1. Cinnamon
  2. Turmeric
  3. CBD

Cinnamon and turmeric might be spices, but they are loaded with health benefits. Cinnamon might be great for cinnamon lattes and scented candles. Still, it aids the body in exercise recovery and adds a little flavor to the smoothie.

Cinnamon has been shown to reduce inflammation, reduce oxidative stress, and ease muscle soreness. And turmeric is just as beneficial. It has the potential to reduce post-exercise soreness after high-intensity training. These two spices are healing for your mind and body.

CBD might not be a spice, but it plant-based! CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is a compound found in the cannabis plant. To be legal in the United States, CBD has to be crafted from the hemp plant.

The hemp plant contains all 20 amino acids, 9 of which your body cannot create on its own. And CBD oil is nutrient-dense and filled with therapeutic properties when it is not isolated.

CBD can help tissues and tendons recover after intense exercise because of its indirect impact on the endocannabinoid system. Athletes, seniors, and people like you are using CBD daily to help workout recovery, support sleep, stress, anxiety, depression, and more! All of which are important for any fitness routine.

My secret ingredients are not necessary to the smoothie, but they add their own element of benefits to fueling and healing my body. My goal is to always hit the pavement tomorrow.

It is super important to take care of your body all the time. Consuming healthy meals every day, no matter the intensity of your physical activity is vital to your overall health and well-being.

In this crazy, fast-paced, social distancing society, making something easy and nutritious sounds perfect. So why not make it a lifestyle. Try one of our smoothies; we promise you will love it.
