My first-time CBD use failed, but I tried again and learned that the daily use of CBD is very beneficial when you have a quality product.
What is CBD? Here is Your Quick Lesson
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a molecular compound found in cannabis plants. This compound shows amazing therapeutic benefits in helping support homeostasis (or balance) in your body.
CBD is legal in the United States thanks to the Farm Bill of 2018. However, the one crucial thing to know is that legal CBD has to come from the hemp plant – a species of the cannabis family. The reason CBD is permitted in the hemp plant is that it produces less than 0.3% THC.
That's your quick lesson.
Mistakes I Learned Buying and Trying CBD for the First Time
My experience with CBD started a few years ago when small CBD stores popped up in Kansas City. Adrian and I were so excited to try it out and see if it did help relieve our stress and anxiety.
We biked down to the store and asked some vague questions, bought our first CBD products, and excitedly rode home to test them out. After a week of vaping CBD, I felt nothing. So I stopped using mine. Adrian tried it a little longer, but also experienced no improvement.
We knew little about CBD, what to look for, or even how to use it properly. We trusted that the store selling it, sold quality products, and would give us the information we needed to be successful. What we learned was they hopped on a new trending fad and were just as clueless as we were.
This first process taught me not to trust everyone's product just because they sell something we want. And that lesson goes for anything I purchase!
A year went by after our first experience before we did anything with CBD again. The exciting thing was that at this time, we were teaching ourselves more about CBD, and my family was also researching CBD for my niece.
The Results of the FDA Approved CBD drug, Epidiolex
My niece is 11 years old and was diagnosed around the age of 8 with CDKL5. This rare X-linked genetic disorder results in severe neurodevelopmental impairment and early onset, difficult to control seizures.
Even though she was diagnosed at 8, she was having small seizures since she was four months old! The doctors tried everything. She has been on so many, costly medications to help calm the seizures. Nothing worked.
Then our family came across the only FDA approved cannabidiol (CBD) drug, Epidiolex. It took months to get her doctors on board for her to try this medication. They finally did, and within days of her using it, her seizures were almost non-existent.
It was a miracle for her. Her miracle of fewer seizures confirmed to us that cannabinoids are therapeutically beneficial.
We were seeing my niece experience such relief that it ignited a flame in Adrian and me to find high-quality CBD products that we could use.
What Research Taught Me About Finding a Good CBD Product
Instead of rushing out and grabbing CBD at any store, I started with the question, "what to look for when buying CBD." That search alone taught me so much about what to look for in a high-quality CBD, but it also showed me the problem of why there is low-quality CBD available.
I was floored with the number of companies and brands selling CBD products and the lack of transparency and knowledge to back up their CBD product. This problem led Adrian and me to want to start our own CBD store to provide people high-quality CBD that is natural and effective.
We knew the benefits of this plant are powerful, and we wanted to give people holistic options in their health and wellness.
One month of talking to CBD manufacturers and researching every bit about their business led me to a company that was able to check off every requirement needed when making and selling a high-quality CBD product. I ordered samples, and we started testing them out.
Here is What Happened When I Took Our CBD Daily
In the first month of trying high-quality CBD oil, I only took it when I felt I needed it. Whether it was my back hurting or I was stressed, I would go to the kitchen, take a squirt of the CBD and wait for it to work its "magic" (in quotes because CBD is NOT a magic pill). Although it brought some temporary relief, it wasn't consistent.
In the second month, I decided to take one dose every morning. I was using about 8-9 mg of our 500 mg Broad Spectrum CBD Oil. Although I noticed a slight difference in my back pain, there was no difference in my stress or even in regulating my mood. Again, I saw some results, but it was still not the result I wanted.
In the third month, I decided to experiment with the amount of CBD I was taking. On days my back pain or mood was not where I wanted it to be, I took two doses of the 8-9 mg of Broad Spectrum CBD Oil. On days I felt great, I kept the treatment to once a day.
Guess what? The results were even better than the second month! I realized the real importance of finding what does and does not work for you when taking CBD.
In the fourth month, I decided to not only microdose three times a day, but I also decided to take a full dropper (1 ml) of CBD – Broad Spectrum 500 mg CBD Oil, so 1 ml is 16.67 mg of CBD.
Guess what? The results were terrific. My back pain lessened, I recovered from workouts quicker, my stress levels were low, and I didn't seem to get as irritated as easily. I had found my sweet spot.
5 Ways CBD Supported Health in my Body
CBD does not cure you; it supports you.
When something in your body is not functioning right, your endocannabinoid system goes to work, trying to restore balance. CBD interacts with your endocannabinoid system and helps the naturally occurring cannabinoids in your body from breaking down so they can do their job and balance the body.
I am now nine months into using our CBD, with six of those months microdosing and using daily. Below are the five ways CBD has helped me.
1. CBD eased the chronic pain in my back.
I wake up most mornings with my back hurting. Pre-CBD use it could take 3-4 hours for my back pain to ease. Once I found my sweet spot for CBD dosage, my back pain finds relief within an hour!
Often inflammation is a factor in chronic pain. Studies suggest that CBD helps relieve inflammation.
2. CBD eased the aches and pains in my muscles and joints after my workout.
I love working out. Before my back injury, I was a long-distance runner. I loved getting in 8-10 miles four times a week, plus plyometrics and yoga. I had trained for multiple marathons and ran my first (and sadly, only one) marathon at 3 hours and 40 minutes. After my back injury, I am lucky to run 6 miles!
After taking CBD consistently, I see that CBD helps my body recover from the exercises I do - running, pilates, strength training, HIIT, and yoga. Before CBD, I was lucky to workout three times a week, and now I am working out six times a week!
3. CBD promotes calmness, which improved my mood.
Sometimes I get moody. I may get easily irritated or overwhelmed that it causes me to be anxious or stressed. I have realized taking CBD every day that it is occurring less and less. I didn't know it until I started tracking my CBD use and realized that the days I experienced higher levels of stress or irritability were also days that I had missed a dose of CBD.
People who suffer from anxiety, depression, or mood disorders don't produce enough serotonin. Serotonin controls moods. CBD works by telling the serotonin receptor in your body to produce more serotonin.
4. CBD improved my daytime focus and energy.
Who knew this would be a benefit of CBD, but I no longer get the desire to take an afternoon nap. CBD has helped improve and balance my energy. I feel energetic throughout the entire day. No more midday slumps for me!
Because CBD can help increase the serotonin in your body, which improves your mood, it also enhances your focus. CBD also boosts your energy levels by strengthens the body's cells that are responsible for making you feel sleepy and sluggish.
5. CBD helps me maintain healthy sleep cycles.
I have NEVER had any trouble falling asleep at night. Sure I might have a random night or two that I struggle. But sleeping has never been a problem. After consistently using CBD and seeing the improvement in the areas I wanted to, I woke up one morning and realized I am no longer groggy when I wake up. I feel refreshed and ready for the day.
Studies suggest that CBD improves sleep because it targets the root of insomnia.
I Will Leave You with This Ending
This is my personal experience with CBD. Adrian has a different experience than me, and so do others. But the common denominator between all of us CBD users is that it works when you are using a high-quality CBD product, accompanied by finding the right dose for you.
Cannabis plants are filled with incredible therapeutic benefits that can bring support to one's body. How has CBD impacted you?
